BOSTON, MA. - October 14th, 2005 - OCCAID is pleased to announce its partnership with SixXS to provide expanded IPv6 connectivity to American end-users. OCCAID and SixXS announced today the opening of the first SixXS IPv6 Point of Presence (POP) in Chicago, the first of its kind in North America.
While the development of IPv6 is steadily growing in the US, means to access this new Internet by the public at large is still very limited. Previously, there were only two to three major tunnelbrokers available in North America who could provide access. However, due to the limited location of existing tunnelbrokers, the useability of IPv6 by the public was limited to only a few geographic locations.
Through partnership with SixXS and industry sponsors, OCCAID plans to provide IPv6 access to public users throughout North America. OCCAID intends to provide access using its global IPv6 backbone, leveraging its strategic settlement-free interconnections with over thirty global peering networks.
"OCCAID has been the preeminent initiator of IPv6 adaptation throughout North America, providing a solid IPv6 coverage all around the continental US. We are one of the very few production IPv6 networks to peer in locations like Boston, Chicago and Miami, which are often left behind in development of the IPv6 internet infrastructure," said James Jun, an OCCAID administrator.
The new SixXS POP, hosted inside the Equinix IBX(R) neutral facility in Chicago, connects directly to the OCCAID core routing node over a native 100Mbps connection. MidPhase is providing the colocation and IPv4 service for connecting end-users into the POP. The new POP is expected to fill in the gaps of IPv6 development in US and Canada, by providing a service which is closer to many users who are unable to find a decent service.
"People often ask us why no one in the US provides fast and reliable IPv6 access service closer to their home. Some have even gone farther, citing 'IPv6 development in the US is virtually non-existant.' This joint effort, between the two top IPv6 adaption projects from the United States and Europe, is our answer to these issues," said James.
OCCAID plans to launch additional SixXS POPs in Atlanta, Ashburn, Boston, Kansas City and Los Angeles for the next round of new installations.
